Dr. Tan Bo Chuan started his career in Medicine with the Ministry of Health Holdings (MOHH) right after graduation from the National University of Malaysia (UKM) in 2009. It was not long before he was initiated into the General Surgical Residency in 2011. He rotated through the tertiary hospitals of National University Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in the course of his training, completing his Master of Medicine (Surgery) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2016 in the process.
He completed his Residency training in 2017, and was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and accredited by the Specialist Accreditation Board (SAB) of Singapore in the same year.
In 2019, Dr. Tan was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan (HDMP) by MOH for a Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery Fellowship at the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, where he worked under the tutelage of Professor Kim Hyung-Ho, who is among the foremost of gastric cancer surgeons in South Korea with his illustrious and ground-breaking work on laparoscopic gastric surgery n stomach cancer.
He worked as a consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal surgeon at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital upon completing his Residency, and rose in seniority, into the lead roles of the Head of the Upper Gastrointestinal & Bariatric Surgery Unit in 2023. This position was concurrently held as he successively progressed as the Clinical Director of the Integrated Care for Obesity and Diabetes (ICOD) Centre in 2024. His work in the ICOD was recognised by the National Healthcare Group (NHG) with a Gold award, emphasising the importance of a collaborative effort between surgeons, endocrinologists, nurses and allied health workers in the multi-disciplinary care of patients with weight-related and metabolic disorders.
Dr. Tan contributes back to the profession by being a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine NUS and a Clinical Block Leader (Surgery) at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine NTU. Being a beneficiary of the Residency, he returns by training and mentoring budding surgeons by serving as a core faculty member of the NHG General Surgery Residency Programme.
Dr. Tan’s other academic contributions include serving as the secretaries of both the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore (OMSSS) and the Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition of Singapore (SingSPEN). He is currently a proctor for Fundamental of Laparoscopy Surgeon, which is a joint educational laparoscopy programme by Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and American College of Surgeons (ACS). He has shared his wealth of surgical expertise through the conduct of multiple surgical conferences and surgical workshops in loco-regional and international stages. He is also involved in multiple research studies and serves as a co-investigator for projects, such as the establishment of a standing database for bariatric surgery at KTPH and research on site-specific adipocytes adiponectin gene expression.
Dr. Tan has a deep clinical passion in minimal access gastrointestinal surgery, encompassing both oncological and metabolic spectrums, in addition to the use of endoscopy in the evaluation of gastrointestinal disorders. He is fluent in English, Mandarin, Bahasa Melayu and the dialects of Hokkien and Cantonese.
